Looking For A Lost Friend

Have a confused Marty wandering around the general question area, looking like he's searching for something -- or, rather, someone. "Where the hell -- okay, you know what? Place is for questions -- anybody seen Victor? He said he was going to 'clear his head' about an hour ago, and we thought he'd be back by now."

[For those curious, Victor does happen to be in the Nexus -- passed out on a rather large couch that Marty just hasn't come across yet, thanks to the weird way space and directions work in this place. Maybe it thought he needed the sleep]

[Marty shrugs] There's a first time for everything, isn't there? Just 'cause WE haven't seen the talking herons doesn't mean they're not out there.

True. It would be cool to see one, honestly.

Hey, maybe if we hang out here long enough. . .I mean, I don't know what I'd say to one if I did meet one, beyond, "uh -- hi," but. . .

But it would be cool? Yeah.

I guess you could ask what flying is like . . .

Yeah, it would be pretty cool.

I could! Imagine it's pretty different for a heron than it is for a Superman.

A lot more effort and flapping involved, yeah.

. . .and now I'm imagining Superman flapping his arms as he flies. [it's more amusing an image than it should be]

*Palmer laughs in an almost worryingly normal way. Someone who's only playing at being anything like human shouldn't be able to understand humor quite this well, especially since he pauses to eat a live frog.*

[Marty will confess that the laughter being interrupted by the consumption of a lightly-frozen live frog is a little unnerving] What do those even taste like?

[palmerthing]

Sort of like chicken or fish, I guess? A bit tougher and definitely bloodier than what you get in stores, but then it is alive. Doesn't seem very fond of reviving with something eating it, either, but I try to make sure that doesn't last long. *Ah, the fun of being a pacifist Thing . . .*

. . .are you seriously doing the "it tastes like chicken" thing. How does a frog taste like chicken?? [really, Marty, this is the thing you will disbelieve?]

'Between chicken and fish' is the bit that you don't believe? Not the whole thing where I'm eating them alive?

Less I don't believe it and more -- I can't help it, the whole "tastes like chicken" thing -- it kinda sounds like you're doing a bad joke. [pause] I'm trying not to think about you eating them alive.

[palmerthing]

There's a reason that's a thing, chicken tastes a bit like lots of stuff.

Seriously? I always thought it was just a joke. . .then again, I don't branch out in my meats much. Definitely a chicken tenders and hamburgers kinda guy.

Look, I know you can't help it -- I just try not to look too close.

Chicken's kinda bland, so just about anything that's kinda bland tastes at least a bit like it.

Yeah, that's fair.

. . .so the frog's not all that tasty then? Or do you really not give a shit what it tastes like? I guess you don't even "taste" the same way we do. . .

Yeah, taste is pretty minor for me. I'm capable of it because humans are, but it doesn't matter nearly as much as whether something is alive.

Huh. Should probably tell this to Doc later, he might want it for the notes.

Yeah, probably.

It's kind of a shame that taste is less important now, I have memories of liking it. Even if they're not really mine.

Right. . .is it weird at all to remember liking sweet stuff, but not really wanting it now? Or anything else? I imagine there's foods you miss as Palmer. . .

Yeah, pretty weird. I have things that I kind of like because he liked them . . . luckily I can make pot work for me still.

[Marty can't help a little laugh] A stoner Thing sounds like it should be in a parody version of the movie.

[palmerthing]

Yeah, I strongly suspect that's why it chose me. I'm not exactly the person you would expect to be the monster, right? Which makes me the first person you should suspect. Which makes me, the last person you should . . . well, you can tie yourself in knots trying to figure this out.

Yeah, I think my brain's good. I mean, I get what you're saying, but I'm not making myself cross-eyed going down the rabbit hole of how suspicious people should have been of you.
