*Mr. Eaten is studying a map today. After a moment he looks up at you.* How does your world work? Is there anything unusual about its laws, its gods, its appearance? Do you by chance have a map of it? This map is of the Neath, we can trade.

Ariana's still a little uncertain about being by the Sign. Even though she's actually been here for a long time, it's the first time she's dared to ask a question. Her friend Edain isn't too far away... she still never goes out in public alone.

Her fingers play with the necklace she wears - a simple crystal on a thin chain, though close observation might reveal it seems to be glowing very slightly - as she asks, "Are there any others who live here, in this place, instead of the other worlds it touches?"

*She is not quite supernaturally pretty, the woman sitting at the Sign. Not quite. But her voice sounds uncannily like water trickling over stones and her shoeless feet have tiny hooves on the toes.* What do you think when you think of faeries? Some silly flower-dwelling fool? A trickster? A thing with teeth?

*A man, or at least a humanoid shape in a robe, is people-watching from a dark corner. That only holds its interest for a few minutes even here, however, so before long it comes up with a few questions.*

What do you hunger for most, and what is the most hungry you have ever been? What are the best and worst things you have eaten, be it in morals or simply taste?

Alice has found a comfortable and safe (as far as she knows -- it certainly isn't trying to eat her right now) armchair near the Nexus to plop herself in. She has one arm wrapped around her middle, and looks vaguely queasy. "So -- what exactly does it mean when you suddenly can't stand the smell of bacon frying?" she inquires of the world at large. "I've never objected to it before, but this morning. . .I couldn't even have breakfast." Yes, she's aware this is probably a question for a doctor, but one of the downsides of living in their pocket universe is that there's none readily available for her to see. And she doesn't exactly trust the ones in her home universe (given she's from the Victorian era and all).

Duela is by the sign with a big basket of mixed candies.

"So, time isn't always the same from one of the portals or doors to the next, which can be fun... I went trick-or-treating last night and it's February at home, and if I found the right portals maybe I could even go trick-or-treating every single day if I wanted to. But, the important thing there is it means I have candy now. And I will share it if you can help me solve something."

"I mean, I know who in my family I should ask when it comes to questions, but given the particular one that would just be double awkward. Because it's... Ok, I have a boyfriend. Or maybe had a boyfriend, because I still don't know what happened there near the end and he didn't come back after I shoved him off the roof. And then there was all the timesoup stuff so he sort of didn't exist for a while. But tommorow... well, I'd kind of not like for any of my parents to hit him with a crowbar and then blow him up... again. Unless he did set us up, and then I call dibs."

"It hurts thinking maybe he lied to me. But it feels weird thinking maybe he didn't and then he didn't come back. And, ok, he's probably not really any more sane than I am, but he's not crazy in the same way, and I think I could use some advice on how to make it all not awkward? Because... because I'm pretty sure I still love him."

It might be a good idea to carry an umbrella when walking in the open area of the Nexus today. Not because of rain, however, but because of a light shower of wrapped fun-sized candies that started when a threshold number of portals reached midnight on October 30th (or the first second of the 31st, depending on how you look at it) and will continue until the same conditions for midnight October 31st.

The free candy is perfectly safe. The ground fog playing over the grassy field, however, carries an LOL with the following effects: If someone is not in costume they suddenly will be (mun's choice), and may have abilities to match whatever they're costumed as. An example would be someone in a ghost costume gaining the temporary ability to float or walk through walls. If someone is already in a costume they might get related abilities, but will otherwise be partly immune. All effects will wear off at the same time as the end of the candy shower.

In other words: Happy Halloween, everyone.

It's taken Techno and Middy a while to consider returning to the Nexus, and longer still before they'd brave their treehouse in the edges of the woods again. And only then after persuading others to help them widen and clear a better path between it and the Wilybot Warehouse, with lights and walkway stones and even a guide rope. And they're not going near the rest of the woods. Techno still has nightmares about spiders, and Middy still jumps if anyone mentions bears.

But they'd received a new update from Xavier in Neo Arcadia, and Techno had realized they'd left some of their scrapbooks in the treehouse... and so there they are...

There's a fellow who seems to really like Guy Fawkes and the color red, sitting perched on top of the Nexus Sign. (Because, really, it's a nice perch and it isn't harming anything for him to do so.) When he speaks it's obvious there's some sort of voice modifying device built into that suit. Either that or he really does sound like an Anonymous video.

"'The only thing we have to fear is fear itself' is a well-known saying, but what would you suggest for someone whose fear is becoming fear itself?"

The medical building next to the warehouse is having a quiet day, which has been a usual occurrence since the end of the Ragnarok War. With the occasional exception of Wilybots letting the field drop to spar, injuries don't often happen inside the Nexus itself.

The Grassy Field is filled with the scent of popcorn, cotton candy, and other fairground food. Lights and music come from the rides that seem to have sprung out of nowhere and, knowing this place, possibly did. Some of the usual visitors, out of an interest in helping things along, have put refurbished Sniper Joes or disarmed and repurposed B1 Battle Droids to work at the ride controls. No tickets are needed.

They then went on to set up concession stands, midway games, and a trading bazaar to expand on the theme and possibly make some pocket money. Others are encouraged to do the same if they wish.

(This is meant as an odd sort of 'get to know each other' post. There are, as mentioned, NPCs to run the rides. Also, some of my characters are acting as enablers by running midway games and concessions, and there's an open yardsale-like bazaar area. Have your character reply to the main post, or to one of the replies, or even 'threadjack' to 'bump into' people. Also there's nothing stopping your characters from setting up shop at the bazaar if that's more their thing, or trying something else like busking or a concession stand. Check the format I've used for titles to make those replies easier to find in the page index. Same applies for any interesting rides that don't yet have a thread - just start one! Remember, the important thing is to mingle and have fun!)

(It's been a while since anything was done here (and the last two posts involving my charas were stuff so old I think they were both dropped from my charas' personal continuity in recent cleanups). But, I'm trying to get back on the ball and, as part of that, I'm dusting this old place off. I'm going to crosspost this to the main journal for those who haven't noticed the OOC comm, and then set up a late Summer Carnival to get things going. :) )

"I find myself in a difficult situation. Given the nature of this place... it can't be completely unique."

"I lost someone I cared about, because access to his universe is gone. It was always a possibility, and yet... it was completely unexpected when it happened. For some time, I've kept surveillance in place in case the portal returned..."

"When you lose someone, there's a point when you have to accept they are not coming back. It's expected to mourn the loss... but... How does one mourn for someone, when you know they're not dead? And... he was an alternate, so there is a counterpart in my own world. How can I make it less awkward if I have to work with him?"

Mikoto only rarely visits the Nexus. Once, those visits had been to travel from one reality to another, exploring, trying to find a world she could feel at home on. That had changed with a portal that had dropped a sopping wet and very-nearly-dead wizard on her.

Now, her trips are more often restricted to the Nexus Mall for supplies, or the Nexus Library to research subjects in her search for a cure for her oldest brother. She's en route from the former to the latter when the sounds of yelling, slightly distorted, alert her to the appearance of a new portal nearby. Curiosity prompts her to investigate.

The portal appears, even on first glance, to be one of the more unusual ones. It has some sort of curtain hanging in it, but attempts to touch the fabric are blocked as if some barrier prevents actually passing through the portal. Mikoto retrieves scanning equipment from her pocket as she decides to analyze the energy patterns of this particular rift to see if it was strange in any other ways.

She can hear laughter on the other side, and someone yelling "Come on, you can do better than that!" There was a bit of an echo, and she wonders if the other side of the portal might be in a cavern or large stone room. She's glancing over the scan results, confirming that the portal is one-way only...

Which is when someone lands on her.

"What necessities do you live by?" There's just enough edge to Telrim's cool tone to hint at her annoyance. As happens more often than she'll admit to her colleagues, the Controller's using the Sign area for personal reasons. She's leaning against the back of an armchair, arms folded. Sitting is for the weak, perhaps. "What facts of life that can't be changed?"
in_the_cracks: Sceptical Telrim (Thinking critically)
[personal profile] in_the_cracks
Telrim has parked herself on a couch near the Sign. It’s quite hard to miss the enormous, flashing Day-Glo monstrosity, and yet the Yeerk is disregarding it for now. She’s hunched over, elbows resting easily on her knees, mind elsewhere. On the low table in front of her is a wire cage, fresh from a Nexus pet shop. Huddled inside is a feathered, six-limbed creature about the size of a small cat. It’s really quite cute, if you’re the type to appreciate that.

Telrim isn’t. She doesn’t seem to be any happier about this than the chadoo is. In point of fact she’s staring at it with the kind of intent suspicion normally reserved for possible spies.

For all she knows, it might be.

“Very well,” she says eventually, reaching out to turn the cage around. She raises her voice to the Nexus at large.  “Who knows anything about this?”

Well... This was interesting. Forte had been out exploring on her own in armor again, not that she could get very far with the wall blocking their home. Well, not usually.

But today was different. Today she'd found an opening. A gap. And she was planning to make the most of it. She'd missed the alternates, but there was no way of knowing if they were still around. Or if they're even around anymore. But the sign was familiar.

But she doesn't really have a question. Just curiosity and the urge to explore. Her Gospel was tagging along at her heels.
