"Friends are awesome," Marty agrees. "Hell, I met most of my current family through the Nexus. Victor, Alice, and Dee are all from different universes than me and Doc, but after years of being together -- well, Victor and Alice tied the knot a little while back, and Doc unofficially adopted Victor and Dee. And I consider Doc an honorary uncle, so suddenly I have a lot of cousins."

Friendship is a good start, at least. Perhaps I could see thy world an' meet thy family some time, iffen ya don't mind.

"Well, our world isn't any great shakes -- weird pocket universe that mirrors another, bigger one -- but if you're interested in seeing a really depopulated Chicago. . ." Marty shrugs. "And we're constantly popping in and out of here, so you're probably bound to run into one of them sooner or later."

"Yeah, you made it pretty clear it's a crap-heap," he says with a little smile. "Probably better to stick to meeting here for now."

Bound ta be better than Lud. I've only been there once, but that was far more than enough. Think poisoned, glowin' New York with broken air raid sirens, save that some lunatic replaced the usual warnin' with ZZ Top. *He rubs at one ear.* Iffen I never hear "Velcro Fly" in all my life again it will be far, far too soon.

Marty arches an eyebrow. "So. . .a really weird crap-heap, then. Sheesh -- I actually like ZZ Top, but I don't think I could listen to them on a loop. Or through an air raid siren."

Not like it matters much now; the mind made for controllin’ the train out o’ the city decided ta release nerve gas on the whole place afore I was even born. I was only there ta see iffen any were yet alive ta rescue.

And that gets a wince. "Oh jeez. . .were there any?" He's hoping -- stories of people dying from the whims of strange intelligences (even if this case sounds more like an AI gone bad) tend to give him nightmares. Though he can't imagine nerve gas spares many. . .

It's not the best news he could have gotten, but Marty breathes a sigh of relief all the same. "Good. Glad to hear it." Even deaf and mad, there's still a hope of a second chance.
